During the Triple-Crown
events, thoroughbred horse racing commands a national audience. But three
Saturdays a year can’t support an industry that was once the most popular sport
in America. In part two of
our series on “Track Tech”, WEKU’s Jacalyn Carfagno tells us how racing hopes
to regain its audience.
One of our region’s
largest cultural fairs is this weekend. The 43rd annual Appalachian Festival is
back at Coney Island in Cincinnati, Ohio after being rained out
last year. More than 50,000 people are expected to fill the banks of the Ohio looking for down home
music, cooking, storytelling, and dancing.

Since the beginning of time people who are bigger and more powerful have bullied their smaller less powerful counterparts. A 2009 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System study released by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention shows at that time WV had the third highest rate of students who were bullied at school out of the 40 states that participated. Bullying takes on a whole new meaning thanks to the technology available in today’s society. The topic has made headlines across the nation after bullying pushed some young people to commit suicide, and West Virginia is not immune.

With a $1 million grant from the governor’s office, it’s now in McDowell County,
as a partner in the Reconnecting McDowell project. As part of our series on revitalization
efforts in McDowell County, Suzanne Higgins spoke with Save The Children senior program
specialist, Anna Hardway.
Funeral services are being held this weekend for Bluegrass legend Everett Lilly who died Tuesday at his Raleigh County home. The Lilly Brothers and Don Stover were pioneers in bringing southern Appalachian music to the upper northeastern region of the United States, and as far away as Japan. Everett and his older brother “Bea" started their duet in the 1930’s on local radio and the Wheeling Jamboree. Everett Lilly also played with country music-greats Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. Suzanne Higgins spoke to Lilly in 2008, just before his induction into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame
A young entrepreneur in Charleston has big plans. Jennifer Miller opened a small shop two years
ago. The name of her business is Mission
Savvy. It's an eclectic mix of stylish
eco friendly clothing, locally made decorative items such as pillows and
candles, bags of healthy snack foods, and various cookbooks that feature
recipes for preparing raw foods. Tucked
into the corner of her store near the front door is a glass refrigerator packed
with ready to grab organic food. She
calls it healthy fast food.
